Diane E. Cossins Memorial Graduate Scholarship in Criminology

Endowed by Professor Edwin A Cossins, Mrs Lucille J Cossins, and Mrs Carolyn Blower, parents and sister of Diane Cossins who received a BA, 1988, and a MA, 1991, in Sociology, from the University of Alberta.

Criteria: Awarded annually to a student registered in a MA, LLM, or PhD program who is engaged in thesis research of the Canadian criminal justice system. Students may apply, in open competition, to hold the scholarship for a second year.

Karol J Krotki Population Research Graduate Scholarship

Endowed by the Society of Edmonton Demographers who created the Alberta Endowment Fund for Demographic Research.

Criteria: Applicants must be full-time doctoral students registered in the Department of Sociology in an academic program having significant demographic content. Applicants must have completed a full year of course work in the doctoral program with First Class academic standing (3.5/4.0 GPA). The specialization area exam must be successfully completed before start of tenure. There is no restriction on citizenship. The recipient is required to submit a written report to the Sociology Graduate Office within 12 months. The report must include a research statement of progress and an accounting of research expenses. The scholarship is non-renewable.

Society of Edmonton Demographer's Scholarship for PhD Students in Population Research

Endowed by the Society of Edmonton Demographers who created the Alberta Endowment Fund for Demographic Research.

Criteria: Awarded annually to a student entering, or continuing in a full-time doctoral program whose major field of study and research is demography. Awarded on the basis of academic merit and research potential. There is no restriction based on citizenship. Preference will be given to doctoral students in the Department of Sociology. In the event there are no eligible students in the Department of Sociology, the scholarship may be offered to a full-time student in another doctoral program at the University of Alberta whose major field of study and research is demography. If a suitable candidate is not available, then the scholarship will not be awarded.

Application: A letter of application, which includes a statement of proposed research, and all academic transcripts, must be received in the Sociology Graduate Program Office on or before September 15th. The Department of Sociology's Graduate Admissions and Awards Committee will review all applications and forward the name of the recommended candidate to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research.

Dr. Jean Agrios Graduate Scholarship in Sociology

Criteria: Awarded annually to a student registered full-time in a graduate degree program in the Department of Sociology at the University of Alberta on the basis of academic achievement (grade point average of 3.5 or greater).

Application: By application (March 1) to the Department of Sociology, Chair.

Dr Gordon Hirabayashi Graduate Scholarship in Sociology

Endowed by supporters of the Department of Sociology, University of Alberta in honor of Dr Gordon Hirabayashi (1918 - 2012 ), who was the first Chairperson of the University of Alberta's Department of Sociology. During his years as department head, he led his colleagues in building one of Canada's leading Sociology departments. Dr. Hirabayashi's North America-wide reputation as a defender of minority group rights is based on his principled resistance to the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II when he forced a United States Supreme Court ruling that led to his own imprisonment. Four decades later, in 1987, the ruling was overturned.

Criteria: Awarded annually to a student registered full-time in a graduate degree program in the Department of Sociology at the University of Alberta with research interests in one or more of the following areas: human rights, race and ethnic relations, social inequality, or social justice. The recipients will be selected on the basis of superior academic achievement (equivalent to a grade point average of 3.5 or greater on the University of Alberta grading scale).

Application: Application forms are available in the graduate student office in the Department of Sociology, 5-21 Tory, University of Alberta. Eligible students should submit their application to the department.

Wayne McVey Population Res Grad Scholarship for MA Students

Endowed by the Society of Edmonton Demographers who created the Alberta Endowment Fund for Demographic Research

Criteria: Awarded annually to a student entering, or continuing in a full-time master's program in the Department of Sociology whose major field of study and research is demography, or a demography-related field. Awarded on the basis of academic merit and research potential. There is no restriction based on citizenship. If a suitable candidate is not available, the scholarship will not be awarded.

Application: There is no application form; eligible students will be considered automatically by the Department of Sociology.

Rosalind Sydie Award

Endowed by the friends of Dr. Rosalind Sydie

Criteria: Open to full-time MA and PhD students in the Sociology and WGS departments (alternates by year) with superior academic achievement that specialize in gender, equity, feminist theory, women's social history, and/or women and cultural production.

Application: Students will be notified when the application is open. Documents are to be submitted to the graduate office.

 

Departmental Travel Awards

Sociology Conference Travel Award

The Department of Sociology aims to reimburse students for up to a maximum of $500 per year (from September 1 to August 31) for travel expenses incurred in presenting their research at refereed academic conferences. Funds are allocated on a competitive basis and awards vary in amount depending on available funding, and the number of applicants, each year. To be eligible to apply, students must be registered full-time and be making satisfactory academic progress. MA students may apply once in Years 1 & 2 of their program, and PhD students may apply three times in Years 1-5. Graduate students are also encouraged to apply for FGSR travel award funding (e.g. the Mary Louise Imrie award which is given once during a MA student's program; and the J Gordin Kaplan Award which is given once during a PhD student's program).

Jim Hackler International Conference Travel Award

Three awards of up to $1,000 each to graduate students for travel expenses incurred in presenting their research at international refereed academic conferences (outside of Canada).

Application: There is one application form for both the Sociology Conference Travel Award and Jim Hackler International Conference Travel Award. There are two annual application deadlines: March 1 and August 1. A call will go out to all graduate students before each round. Please submit your request at least 6 weeks prior to your travel date when possible.

FGSR Graduate Travel Awards

Effective March 20, 2018,changes have been made to the FGSR Graduate Travel Award Program.

The Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research (FGSR) offers graduate travel awards to financially support graduate students who travel in the interests of disseminating their research results or developing their research.

Please Note: Travel award funding is not guaranteed to any students and is subject to availability.

Allocation: The FGSR will offer awards until allocated funding is expended in the specified periods below:
  • April 1, 2018 to July 31, 2018
  • August 1, 2018 to November 30, 2018
  • December 1, 2018 to March 31, 2019
