The PhD in Sociology strives to educate scholars with a breadth of knowledge of the discipline and specialized in-depth knowledge of particular fields within the discipline. In addition to the below program requirements, students must also complete a Professional Development requirement.
Program Requirements
This is a Full-time study program. Students will normally complete the required 500- and 600-level graded coursework within the first two academic terms and then take the additional two years to complete the Specialization Exam and Candidacy Exam. After successful completion of the Candidacy Exam, candidates then proceed to the completion of the degree, normally within two years, by conducting thesis research and related scholarly activity. Note, timelines for completion vary.

The Department routinely offers additional graduate courses each year. Students can request variations of the required course to be considered on a case-by-case basis.
Students in the MA and PhD programs are also expected to attend a series of Professional Skills Workshops hosted by the Department.
