Our Department is a home to a group of 18 faculty members, approximately 80 graduate students and support staff involved in teaching, research and outreach to constituencies within Alberta and around the world. Our work involves the application of economic and sociological theory, quantitative and qualitative methods, and applications to important problems related to food, agriculture, the environment, and natural resource management. Our research output positions us as the top department of its kind in Canada, and among the top 20 institutions internationally1 .

REES professors place a strong emphasis on high quality teaching and research, involving close collaboration with our graduate students. We take pride in developing personal contacts with students and integrate most of our students into ongoing faculty-led research activities. This approach transfers to numerous opportunities for one-on-one guidance in thesis research, field research opportunity in Canada and abroad, support for thesis writing and academic publishing. Our graduate students from around the world are highly engaged in the social and academic affairs of the Department and also participate in regular activities sponsored by the Resource Economics and Environmental Sociology Student Association (REESSA). The education and training provided by undergraduate and graduate programs in the Department prepares our graduates to take on various roles in public and private sectors to address the myriad of issues regarding sustainable livelihoods and environments across the globe.

We invite you to explore the REES website where you will find information on our people, teaching and research programs; or drop by our departmental offices for a visit. We hope that our enthusiasm will rub off on you!
