Enterprise Information Governance

Information Governance supports collaborative data stewardship and analytics to meet the University’s strategic goals. Its vision is to ensure that data is a trusted asset which is used for the betterment of the University as a whole.

The goals of Information Governance are to:

  • Formalize University roles and responsibilities in relation to institutional data assets
  • Facilitate collaboration amongst all parties using data, including data owners and stewards
  • Ensure transparency for institutional data assets. This includes what data we have, what it means, how to appropriately access it, and who to contact should you have any questions

Institutional data is data which is created, collected and stored by the University, or any office of the University, in support of its administrative and operational functions. This does not include data created by or derived from research and scholarly activities.

For more information, please see the Enterprise Information Governance Framework.

RASCI/People

Governance of institutional data is the responsibility of Data Owners and Data Stewards according to the Information Governance RASCI. The RASCI is the University document which details all data domains, subdomains, and roles and responsibilities that support trust in our data.

Roles and Responsibilities

Data Owner

Authority to approve policies, standards, roles, responsibilities and any other body required for information governance activities. Data Owners are accountable for data quality within their respective sub-domains.

Data Steward

Manage the storage, use, quality checks, processes, and procedures needed to maintain expected data integrity within their functional areas. Data Stewards are responsible for data quality and access controls for their data.

Subject Matter Expert

Knowledgeable individuals in their respective areas that can be relied upon to support the Data Owners and Stewards in decision making.

Documents

Understanding our data is the key that will open the doors for any future technological advancement, and empower users to trust data-informed decision making.

The Data Strategy covers everything that we do as it relates to data, including how data is collected, stored, managed, validated, corrected and shared.

It defines what data is collected, and establishes the standards for good management including roles and responsibilities, measurement of data quality, and standards of how data must be prepared for data sharing and accessibility.

The Reporting and Analytics Strategy outlines how we can best take advantage of our data, and leverage the University community’s wealth of skills to facilitate data driven decision making.

It defines the pathway for trusted institutional and operational reporting, through integration of a common data repository with secure access controls, sharing core resources, and upholding standards through community of practice.
