International Collaborative Workshop with Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences (May-June 2021)

Participate in this unique international and cross-cultural philosophical exploration!

Meet once a week with students in social work from the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences to discuss short philosophical texts about self-perception and the perception of others and reflect on their intercultural experience in the course and beyond.

Key Objectives:

• To explain key ideas such as the face, absolute responsibility, the Other, the world of perception, the other seen from the outside, the lived body

• To apply the idea of the ‘other’ to intercultural and transcultural encounters within the classroom and beyond

• To reflect on how philosophical ideas affect encounters with concrete others

• To take part in and reflect on the practice of intercultural and transcultural dialogue

Details:

• Open to all UAlberta students in all Faculties (undergrad and grad).
• No prior knowledge of philosophy and no knowledge of German are required.
• All discussions will be held in English.
• Synchronous Zoom discussions: Tuesdays 10:00 - 11:30 am, May 4 - June 25, plus 1-2 hrs of asynchronous work each week (Note: attendance and active participation at all weekly sessions is expected)
• No cost
• Discussions led by Dr. Marie-Eve Morin, Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alberta and Dr. Cornelia Muth, Professor of Social Work at the Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences.
