Wahkohtowin Law and Governance Lodge
From 2018 - 2022 the Wahkohtowin Law and Governance Lodge (WLGL) was a community-led research unit, operated as a partnership between the Faculties of Native Studies and Law, to support Indigenous communities' law and governance work, co-founded and co-led by Dr. Shalene Jobin and Dr. Hadley Freidland.
WLGL’s purpose was to:
- Support Indigenous communities' goals to identify, articulate, and implement their own laws and governance.
- Develop, gather, amplify, and transfer wise practices, promising methods and research tools.
- Produce useful and accessible practical governance resources and public legal education.
The WLGL responded to the expressed needs of Indigenous communities and organizations who want effective strategies to identify, rebuild and develop law and governance structures that resonate within their own legal and governance traditions.
It did so by building on and merging two well-developed practice models from the University of Alberta's Indigenous Governance Program (IGP) and the Indigenous Law Research Unit (ILRU) from the University of Victoria.
The IGP continues to partner with Indigenous communities to support their governance needs.
