Digital Humanities
All graduate program applicants at the University of Alberta apply through the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies (GPS) application portal. Applications are subject to standard requirements for all graduate applicants as determined by GPS and outlined in the official academic calendar. The application portal opens in September.
Admission Requirements
The Digital Humanities program addresses several different computer-based technologies. It does not require previous experience in these, but offers seminars to aid students in gaining the desired range of technical skills.
Admission requirements for the Digital Humanities graduate program are in accordance with the minimum requirements for all graduate programs at the University of Alberta outlined in detail in the Calendar. These requirements include:
- A University of Alberta baccalaureate degree or an equivalent qualification from another recognized academic institution
- A minimum Admission Grade Point Average (AGPA) of 3.0 on a 4-point scale, or an equivalent standing, calculated on the last ★60 of graded coursework completed at the time of application, or on the equivalent of the last two years of full-time graded coursework.
- Proof of English language proficiency
Application Documents
Please note, there are two main programs for which you can apply in Digital Humanities:
Course-based
Master of Arts in Digital Humanities
*Applicants admitted to the course-based master, after successfully completing at least one term in the program, may apply to add a specialization to their program and/or change to a thesis-based master. See here for a list of specializations.
Thesis-based only
Combined, dual degree – Master of Arts in Digital Humanities and Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS)
Digital Humanities requires the following documents as part of the application process:
- Academic documents, including transcripts and degree certificates (as specified by GPS)
- A current Curriculum Vitae (CV)
- Proof of English Language proficiency if required (IELTS, Pearson, TOEFL)
- Names, titles, and contact information, including email address, for three referees who have consented to provide an academic or work reference (academic references are preferred).
- A two-page statement of program/interest that describes your suitability for the program and your specific research interests/purpose for the program.
- *DH/MLIS combined degree only: 1000-2000 word Statement of Purpose (see the School of Library and Information Studies (SLIS) website for further requirements)
The deadline for application to the MA in Digital Humanities (course-based) or to the combined MA/MLIS program is January 15 for all applicants. Please note that all materials, including letters of reference, must be received by us by this date.
