Celebrating 2024 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, Robert Philp
Madisen Gee - 4 September 2024
Robert Philp, ’72 BA, ’75 LLB, had led a life dedicated to making change. After nearly 30 years as a lawyer, he was named a provincial court judge and later, chief of the Alberta Human Rights Commission. In the legal community, he was a revered mentor to students and young lawyers. He transformed an annual grudge match hockey game between prosecutors and lawyers into a fundraiser, and was the driving force behind a Law Society of Alberta initiative requiring its 10,000 lawyers to take Indigenous competence training.
Outside the courtroom, Robert regularly works with marginalized people and groups. His work as a philanthropist spans over five decades, as Robert has volunteered with Boyle Street Community Services since it opened in 1971, and is involved with the organization’s current King Thunderbird Centre building project.
In recognition of his significant contributions to the legal sector and service to the community, we in the Faculty of Law are proud to congratulate Robert Philp as a recipient of this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award!
This year’s incredible group of Alumni Awards winners will be honored at the Myer Horowitz Theatre on Thursday, October 24, 2024. Please find event details here.
