Faculty of Law Message of Support for our Indigenous Community

Alongside Indigenous peoples and all Canadians, the legal community is grieving the loss of the 215 children whose remains were discovered in an unmarked grave at the site of the former Kamloops Indian Residential School on the land of Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc.

On behalf of the Faculty of Law, I want to express our sorrow and emphasize our support for Indigenous peoples at this difficult time.

I encourage everyone to read the letter by Dr. Florence Glanfield, the University of Alberta Vice-Provost (Indigenous Programming and Research), issued in response to this tragic news.

We know that for many in our community, this news brings deep pain and anger, especially for those who live with direct or intergenerational trauma. To our Indigenous community members and all those who are mourning, please know that supports are available to you, both here at the Faculty and in our wider campus community. Those supports are listed below.

Today marks the start of Indigenous History Month. As we celebrate our Indigenous students, faculty, staff and alumni who uplift our community, we must also hold space to remember those who are grieving and to recommit ourselves to the ongoing work of reconciliation. We have also included educational resources below.
