Criminal law professor named one of Canada’s 25 most influential lawyers

Professor Peter Sankoff of the University of Alberta Faculty of Law has been recognized by Canadian Lawyer Magazine as one of the top 25 most influential lawyers in Canada.

Published annually, the list honours individuals who have made meaningful contributions to the justice system and legal profession. Individuals are nominated by legal associations and peers in the profession, and the finalists are determined based on a public poll.

“I’m tremendously grateful for this honour,” said Sankoff.

Sankoff was recognized under the Government/Non-profits/Associations category for his efforts in legal education and the influence he had on the legal community during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In mid-March, when Sankoff witnessed the adverse effects of the pandemic on the legal community in general and law students in particular, he began hosting webinars on criminal law for law students and fellow lawyers, with all proceeds donated to those impacted by the public health crisis.

Sankoff went on to create and run the 100 Interns Project, which raised over $120,000 in six weeks to help fund 100 public law internships during the economic downturn.

Sankoff was also recognized for his work in co-hosting the Clawbie award-winning podcast, Paw and Order, which discusses animal law issues, and his online efforts through social media and video recordings to explain complex concepts to lawyers and the public alike.

“The 100 Interns Project was one of the most important accomplishments of my career, and to be able to help so many students find employment at a difficult time was incredibly gratifying. I’d like to share this honour with the many amazing contributors and supporters who helped make 100 Interns a reality.”
