Prof. Joanna Harrington named new Eldon Foote Chair in Law

Professor Joanna Harrington, an authority on the links between national and international law, has been appointed the Eldon Foote Chair in International Business and Law for a term extending to mid-2023.

The appointment will see Harrington deepening her research into timely aspects of the law where her work is already well-known and cited.

Those include corruption and bribery in international business transactions, general matters of transnational criminal law including extradition, and international civil procedure in relation to human rights matters.

She is also a co-author of a leading text on Canada's approach to international law that has earned citation from the Supreme Court of Canada, and is a member of a SSHRC Partnership Grant project focused on securing accountability for the victims of international crimes through various means.

Her planned future projects include more work on the use of deferred prosecution agreements to address corporate criminality to secure an unfair business advantage. She also plans to pursue further research into the work of the United Kingdom's Serious Fraud Office.

Harrington has been a law professor for 20 years and joined the University of Alberta Faculty of Law in 2004.

The Eldon Foote Chair was established by the late Eldon Foote, '48 LLB, a philanthropist who left a prominent career practising law in Alberta in 1967, and went on to build a successful multi-level marketing company in Australia, Hong Kong and Japan. He died in 2004.
