Students will be given a rare chance to hear one of the National Hockey League's most experienced administrators when Brian Burke visits the Law Centre on October 4 for Opportunities in Sports Law, Current Issues and LGBTQ Issues.
Burke is the current president of hockey operations for the Calgary Flames, a role he has held since 2013. Prior to joining the Flames, Burke served as general manager in Hartford, Vancouver, Anaheim and, most recently, Toronto.
Born in Rhode Island and a graduate of Providence College, Burke played two seasons with the Springfield Indians and the Maine Mariners in the American Hockey League before attending Harvard Law School, where he graduated in 1981. Today he is a dual citizen of Canada and the US, having spent most of his professional career north of the border.
In addition to being a major figure in the NHL, Burke also served as the general manager for the US national men's hockey team at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, and currently serves on the board of directors of Rugby Canada.
In a more personal capacity, he is also a spokesperson for the 'You Can Play Project' in honour of his late son Brendan, and was awarded the Spirit of Courage Award from the Courage Campaign Institute.
Please join us for this event on October 4, 2017 at 12 pm in McLennan Ross Hall (231/237).
Please note attendance is exclusive to the UAlberta Law community.
