The University of Alberta Faculty of Law is pleased to announce that Doug Peterson is the recipient of the 2016 Pringle/Royal Sessional Teaching Excellence Award. The Faculty established the award in 2005 to recognize excellence in teaching by a sessional lecturer. In 2013, the award was named in honour of two long-serving instructors, the late Alex Pringle, Q.C., and Peter Royal, Q.C., both of whom were previous winners of the award.
"I am honoured and flattered to be recognized with this award," said Mr. Peterson.
Mr. Peterson has been teaching at the University of Alberta for 16 years, in both the Faculty of Law and the Alberta School of Business. His teaching interests include international business law, international business transactions, law of business organizations, legal foundations of the Canadian economy, and Pacific Rim law.
"I'm tremendously proud of the calibre of teaching at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law, both by our outstanding faculty and from our exceptional sessional instructors," said Dean Paul Paton. "Sessional instructors enable the Faculty to deliver a broader range of program offerings to students than we would otherwise be able, and they also provide students with mentorship and professional guidance. Many have been with us for years and have mentored generations of graduates. We are most grateful for their contributions."
Added Dean Paton: "Doug Peterson brings significant experience from private practice and corporate counsel settings to the classroom for the benefit of our students. He is committed to ensuring that his students gain valuable information about the real-world application of the law in his class and that they learn skills - especially contract drafting - that will be useful throughout their careers. It's important that students not only learn the drafting skills, but the why behind the choices and clauses, something students praise Doug especially for emphasizing. He also provides his students with an understanding of the business side of the legal profession, something that we're increasingly emphasizing as our graduates enter an increasingly competitive practice environment. I'm pleased that Doug's teaching has been recognized with the 2016 Pringle/Royal Sessional Teaching Excellence Award."
Mr. Peterson will be presented with his award at a reception at the Faculty on September 27, 2016. Past recipients of the award include Karen Hewitt, Q.C. (2015), Naomi Schmold (2014), and Marie Gordon, Q.C. (2013). A full list of award recipients can be found on the Faculty's Awards page.
