The University of Alberta Faculty of Law is proud to announce that Professor Tamara Buckwold is the 2016 recipient of the Hon. Tevie H. Miller Teaching Excellence Award. The award - named in honour of the late Mr. Justice Miller, who served as Associate Chief Justice of the Court of Queen's Bench of Alberta (1984-1993) and Chancellor of the University of Alberta (1986-1990) - recognizes excellence in teaching by a full-time member of the Faculty. It was established in 1998 by the Faculty and the Alumni & Friends of the Faculty of Law Association. Prof. Buckwold joined the Faculty in 2005 and teaches and publishes in the areas of commercial law and contracts.
"Working with students has always been the most stimulating and satisfying part of my academic career, so an award that recognizes commitment to teaching is particularly meaningful to me," said Prof. Buckwold. "I'm fortunate to be part of a faculty in which teaching is highly valued, and especially grateful to my students for their investment in our shared learning experience and for their contribution to this award."
"Prof. Buckwold is the latest in a long line of University of Alberta Faculty of Law professors recognized for teaching excellence," said Dean Paul Paton. "Tamara is well-known amongst students for her exceptional ability to break down complicated legal material, organizing and presenting it in a way that makes the concepts understandable even in subjects not always prone to easy deconstruction. She is engaging and approachable, with a teaching style that makes for a very effective learning environment, one in which students are not afraid to ask questions."
Added Dean Paton: "Tamara has also taken special care to help first year students acclimatize to the rigours of law school, which has endeared her to many. She has been especially committed to inclusion and diversity amongst students and faculty, bringing a thoughtful, practical perspective to important issues and challenges. I'm pleased to see her commitment to students - inside and outside the classroom - honoured with the Hon. Tevie H. Miller Teaching Excellence Award."
Prof. Buckwold will be presented with her award at a reception at the Faculty on September 27. Recent recipients of the award include Mitchell McInnes (2015), Bruce Ziff (2014), and Annalise Acorn (2013). A full list of award recipients can be found on the Faculty's Awards page.
