Class of 2016 orientation day photographThe air in the University of Alberta Faculty of Law was thick with nervous excitement on Tuesday, September 3, 2013, as it saw the arrival of incoming first year students on their first day of orientation.
The new law students were greeted in the law school lobby by the smiling faces of Faculty of Law Student Services staff alongside 2L and 3L students, who welcomed the students to their new place of study for the next three years.
After registration, the incoming first year law students were directed upstairs where they were meet by law alumni and current law students who handed them information and answered many questions.
Once inside the large lecture theatre the first year students were warmly welcomed to the U of A Faculty of Law by Vice Dean John Law and Dean Philip Bryden, who spoke of the challenging yet exciting and fulfilling years of study that lay ahead of them at the law school, and introduced the students to faculty and staff. A number of eminent U of A Law alumni spoke to the first year students, including The Honourable Madam Justice Myra Bielby (LL.B. UAlberta), Courts of Appeal of Alberta, the Northwest Territories and Nunavut; Carsten Jensen, Q.C., (LL.B. UAlberta), President of the Law Society of Alberta; and Cyril Gurevitch, Q.C., (LL.B. UAlberta), CBA-Alberta Branch Past-President.
The formal part of the day for the first year law students concluded with 2L and 3L students leading a number of small group tours around the law school, after which they were all free to relax and chat in the casual environment of the Dean's BBQ, situated in front of the law school building. The first year law students were treated to a wonderful musical performance by Simon Elzen-Hoskyn (J.D. Candidate 2014) whilst enjoying BBQ as served up by Dean Philip Bryden, Vice Dean John Law, Professor Steven Penney, Professor Christopher Sprysak and other faculty members.
