The U of A Faculty of Law's '2012-13 Legal Forum Centenary Speakers Series' presents a talk by Professor Paul Babie, Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Law (Research) in the Adelaide Law School, Australia (Sept 17, 2013)

Katherine Thompson - 11 September 2013

Professor Paul Babie, Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Law (Research) in the Adelaide Law School, to speak on the subject of "Freedom of Religion and Political Expression in Australia" at the Faculty of Law's 2012-13 Legal Forum Centenary Speakers Series, on Tuesday, September 17, 2013.

Australia is the only western democratic state lacking comprehensive constitutional or legislative protection for fundamental rights and freedoms. This lecture explores this gap, taking the protection of religious freedom as its focus, considering the minimal protection found in the Constitution, and various piecemeal State government attempts to fill the gap through legislative means. Having outlined these attempts, the lecture will assess recent judicial treatment of three possible protections for religious freedom: the partial protection found in the Australian Constitution; the attempt to protect religious freedom through the use of exemptions contained in State anti-discrimination legislation; and, the place of religion within the implied Constitutional right of political communication.

Paul Babie is Associate Professor and Associate Dean of Law (Research) in the Adelaide Law School, Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of the Professions, and Director of the Research Unit for the Study of Society, Law and Religion (RUSSLR), at the University of Adelaide. He holds a BA in sociology and political science from the University of Calgary, a BThSt from Flinders University, a LLB from the University of Alberta, a LLM from the University of Melbourne, and a DPhil in law from the University of Oxford. His primary research areas are legal theory, especially the nature and concept of property and the relationship between law and religion; he has published widely in both areas. He teaches property law, property theory, and law and religion.
