The University of Alberta Faculty of Law student Kathleen Coulter (2L) is attending the COP 19 conference in Warsaw, Poland. Kathleen is at the conference representing The World Association of Girl Guides & Girl Scouts (WAGGS). Conservation and sustainability have been interests of Kathleen's for as long as she has been a Girl Scout. And that's quite a long time. This will be her twentieth year as a member of Girl Scouts USA (GSUSA).
As a law student at the University of Alberta, Kathleen is currently researching the policy and law surrounding climate change and environmental migration. After she completed her bachelor's degree, she taught English for a year in the Republic of the Marshall Islands. In the islands, Kathleen witnessed climate change first-hand. Rising sea levels encroached on the coastline and former potable wells were salinated. These observations inspired her commitment to environmental law.
Each year the Conference of the Parties (COP) to the UNFCCC meets to assess progress in dealing with man-made climate change on a global scale and since 2009 WAGGGS has taken a delegation of young women along to the negotiations. At the conference the girls and young women lobby decision-makers, attend and run side events, network with other NGOs working on the environment and carry out actions to ensure no-one can forget the negative effect climate change is having on our world and all of our lives.
On 5 November 2013, this year's group of passionate climate change advocates, including Kathleen Coulter, headed out to Warsaw, Poland to represent WAGGGS at the Climate Change Conference COP 19.
