The U of A Faculty of Law's '2012-13 Legal Forum Centenary Speakers Series' presents a talk by Professor James Stribopoulos, Associate Dean and Associate Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School
Professor James Stribopoulos will speak on the subject of "The Rule of Law on Trial: Police Powers, Public Protest and the G20” at the Faculty of Law, on Thursday, October, 2013. He will critically analyze the legal powers that the police routinely rely on when managing the challenges they face to public order at large public protests; like those that marked the G20 Summit in Toronto. He will argue that ill-defined police powers helped facilitate the worst abuses of civil liberties during the G20 Summit in Toronto. Further, he will contend that this state of affairs is in fundamental tension with the most basic demand of the rule of law; the need for fair notice. Finally, he will argue that until the parameters of police authority are clarified, Canadians most basic civil liberties will continue to be needlessly imperiled into the future.
James Stribopoulos, B.A. (York), LL.B (Osgoode), LL.M (Columbia), JSD (Columbia) is the Associate Dean and an Associate Professor at Osgoode Hall Law School in Toronto where he teaches criminal law, criminal procedure and evidence in Osgoode's JD Program, while also serving as Co-Director of the Part-Time LL.M Program specializing in Criminal Law. Professor Stribopoulos conducts research and publishes on topics related to criminal law, criminal procedure and evidence. His research and teaching are informed by his extensive practical experience as a criminal trial and appellate lawyer. As an appellate lawyer, he has argued appeals regularly before the Court of Appeal for Ontario and the Supreme Court of Canada. Professor Stribopoulos continues to maintain a small appellate court practice with a focus on Charter litigation. Click for a more detailed bio.
