Barry Sullivan of Loyola University Chicago recently was named a Fulbright Canada Visiting Research Chair in Legal Studies at the University of Alberta. Professor Sullivan will be teaching and conducting research in the Faculty of Law during the fall semester.
Professor Sullivan's research project, which is entitled "Access to Government Information in Democratic Societies", will explore access to information as a problem for political and legal theory across legal systems. His research will utilize his extensive experience as a lawyer, legal expert, and university professor to examine citizen access to government information in Canada and the United States.
Professor Sullivan will also be teaching a course called "Reading Constitutions", a comparative course in the interpretation of constitutional instruments in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Canada. Particular emphasis will be placed on similarities and differences in the jurisprudence of the three countries relating to terrorism.
Professor Sullivan is the Cooney & Conway Chair in Advocacy and a Professor of Law at Loyola University Chicago. He holds his J.D. from the University of Chicago and a B.A. from Middlebury College. Professor Sullivan's scholarly work has appeared in leading journals in the United States and Europe. He is a member of the American Law Institute and a Fellow of Phi Beta Kappa. Professor Sullivan has extensive experience in the public and private practice of law, having been a long-time partner in the national law firm of Jenner & Block, where he served as Co-Chair of the Supreme Court and Appellate Practice Group, and an Assistant to the Solicitor General of the United States. He has litigated cases at the highest levels of the state and federal courts, including the Supreme Court of the United States.
Professor Sullivan was Dean of the Law School of Washington and Lee University from 1994 to 1999 and also served as Vice-President of the University. His academic experience includes appointments as a Fulbright Professor in the Faculty of Law and Administration of the University of Warsaw, a Visiting Fellow of Queen Mary College, University of London, and Senior Lecturer in the Harris Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of Chicago.
