Jessica Kennedy (2L) receives prestigious natural resources scholarship.

Katherine Thompson - 24 June 2011

Congratulations to Jessica Kennedy (2L) who received one of 20 tuition scholarships that were awarded in May by the Joe Rudd and The Rocky Mountain Mineral Law Foundation (RMMLF).

The Scholarships Program consists of the Joe Rudd Scholarships, established in 1980 in honor of a prominent natural resources attorney in Alaska, and the RMMLF Scholarships, established in 1993.

Law students enrolled full-time at one of the Foundation's 30 Constituent Law schools and who demonstrate a commitment to the study of natural resources law are eligible to apply for these tuition scholarships. Academic and leadership ability as well as financial need are evaluated by the Foundation's dedicated Scholarships Committee consisting of volunteer attorneys. To date, over $1.2 million has been awarded to 287 scholars.

"I feel extremely fortunate to receive this RMMLF scholarship," says Kennedy, who was also a recipient of a RMMLF scholarship in January. "I lucked out that the scholarship exists in the first place." Kennedy, who completed her MBA with a specialization in natural resources, believes that her education and experience really tie together to tell a story. "It seems like the scholarship was designed just for me," she says.

Kennedy describes her interest in natural resources law as a symptom of living in a province that has a flourishing oil and gas industry. "I find it to be a very dynamic industry and area of law, and at the end of the day, it's a subject I personally find to be very interesting," says Kennedy.

After she graduates with her J.D. in 2012 Kennedy plans to article in Calgary. And after that? "Corporate counsel is definitely something that I can see myself doing in the future, and through that path I may end up taking the executive route, making use of both my MBA and law degrees."
