Faculty of Law Advisory Committee Gathers for Second Meeting, June 17-18, 2011.

Katherine Thompson - 13 June 2011

Members of the Faculty of Law Advisory Committee gathered for their second meeting at the Law Centre, June 17th and 18th, 2011.

The Committee was established in the fall of 2010 and the first meeting was held on October 25, 2010. At that time members of the Committee from Alberta discussed a number of issues including a tuition proposal that was being considered at the time, the impact of the Report of the Federation of Canadian Law Societies Task Force on the Canadian Common Law Degree and the Faculty's initial thinking about plans for our Centenary in 2012-2013.

At the second meeting we were able to include participation from the national and international members of the Advisory Committee. Members of the Committee came from Hong Kong, Beijing, Denver, Toronto and Vancouver, as well as Edmonton, Calgary and Lethbridge, to attend the meeting. These individuals and others from London UK, New York, Montreal and Medicine Hat who have agreed to join the Advisory Committee bring an amazing breadth and depth of experience from a wide range of legal practice, judicial, government, academic and business backgrounds.

The Committee heard a very interesting presentation from Murray Sigler, President of Axia North America, concerning his experiences as Managing Director of the Government of Alberta's UK office as well as the ongoing relationship between Alberta and the UK and other parts of Europe. The Committee's agenda included discussion of the Faculty's Academic Plan 2010-2015 and performance in relation to that Plan, the results of the most recent Law Student Survey of Student Engagement, our international activity, and our plans for a conference on the future of legal education scheduled for the fall of 2013 as the culmination of our centenary celebrations.

The Committee meets on a semi-annual basis, with next meeting scheduled for October 14-15, 2011.
