Congratulations to William H. Hurlburt, Q.C., who recently received a Long Service Award from the Law Society of Alberta to commemorate his 60 years of service in the legal profession.

Mr. Hurlburt, who was born in Vegreville, Alberta, earned his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Alberta in 1949. After articling under S. W. Field, KC, in Edmonton, he began work at Kane and Hurlburt where he remained until 1973. During that time he was a member of the Law Society's Law Reform Committee which, in 1967, devised, and procured acceptance of, the idea that the Attorney General, the University of Alberta and the Law Society should establish a permanent law reform agency, which is now the Alberta Law Reform Institute (ALRI). He has been a member of ALRI's Board since its inception, including a term as Chair, and served as the Institute's Associate Director and Director from 1974 to 1986.

Mr. Hurlburt is the author of two books, The Self-Regulation of the Legal Profession in Canada and in England and Wales; and Law Reform Commissions in the United Kingdom, Australia and Canada. He is the editor of two other books on subjects relating to the legal profession and law reform and is co-editor of a book on choices for peace and security in the Arctic.

He has practiced widely in commercial, conveyancing and corporate law, in utility regulation and other administrative proceedings, and civil litigation. Mr. Hurlburt is currently practicing at Reynolds, Mirth, Richards & Farmer LLP where he engages in civil litigation and a variety of special projects, but serves primarily as advisor and consultant to lawyers.

Mr. Hurlburt is a Professor Emeritus at the University of Alberta Faculty of Law and has received distinguished service awards from the Edmonton Bar Association and the CBA/Law Society, as well as an honorary LLD from the University of Alberta.
