The Faculty of Law, in conjunction with the Alberta Institute for American Studies, held two lectures recently by Fulbright Canada Scholars.
On November 28th, Professor Barry Sullivan presented Representative Democracy and the People's Elusive Right to Know, examining a dissenting opinion in Cohen v. Cowles Media Company, 501 U.S. 663, 678 (1991). Dr. Sullivan discussed issues of a citizen's right to know and access to information, as well as constitutional values on statutory rights to information.
Barry Sullivan was the Fulbright Canada Visiting Research Chair in Legal Studies at the University of Alberta.
On November 30th, Dr. Jason Pierceson discussed Judicial Activism in the United States. In his lecture, Dr. Pierceson examined several cases regarding same-sex marriages in the US Midwest, noting how liberals and conservatives used state courts to achieve their goals, as well as examining how judicial activism may at times precede contemporary politics.
