Elyse van Spronsen
Originally from Calgary, Elyse took her undergrad degree - a Bachelors of Business Administration in Finance - at Trinity Western University, located in Langley BC. After graduating, she worked briefly at CIBC doing debt counseling. While she enjoyed Finance, she preferred a less number's oriented career that could still engage her love of business. After examining a number of options, she felt that the best way to use her knowledge and skills was to go into law.
After moving back to Edmonton, she realized she was "an Alberta girl at heart."
Elyse has most enjoyed the business focused courses at the U of A: oil& gas, corporate securities and bankruptcy & insolvency. She summered at Bennett Jones in Calgary and will be articling there starting in June 2012.
Elyse notes, "the Law Student Association (LSA) is an elected body, and provides a wide variety of services for students; social events, CANs (Condensed Annotated Notes), a yearbook, the Who's Who guide, lockers and support for intramural sports teams."
Additionally, "the LSA is a well-established group, deeply rooted in tradition which is one of our strengths. We hope to continue to develop upon these traditions to ensure the LSA continues to serve students well."
Her LSA experience is extensive, with experience as a First Year Rep in 1L, VP Finance in 2L, culminating in last spring's election to President of the LSA.
As President of the LSA, she is the formal representative of the LSA as well as the contact person for the Faculty's administrative team as well as the Dean's Office. She makes sure the many aspects of the LSA continue to run smoothly. Elyse is also part of conversations on preparatory work on the 2012-2013 Centenary on how to best involve the student body.
"This year, the LSA looks forward to hosting a number of social events aimed to build upon the fantastic sense of collegiality at the law school. Look forward to a Carbolic with a couple of new elements which should make it a great event!"
The LSA is currently planning the first annual holiday FABS, an Ugly Sweater Party taking place in the Gavel on December 1st - stay tuned!
