Moen Judge in Residence

Welcome to Honourable Madam Justice Andrea Moen.

Katherine Thompson - 5 October 2011

Justice Andrea Moen

Our new Judge in Residence at the Faculty of Law is the Honourable Madam Justice Andrea Moen. Prior to her appointment to the Alberta Court of Queens Bench in 2000, she practiced law with Fraser Milner for eighteen years in the areas of forestry and environmental law, as well as in administrative law. Before law school, she worked as a social worker for both the City of Edmonton and Central Mortgage and Housing Corporation.

Justice Moen is taking a judicial study leave to review the available scientific research on the impact of violence, both physical and psychological on children's brains. Her study will examine how time, force, severity, and other parameters impact on the extent of the damage and whether intervention by the courts is possible and if so, what form intervention should take. Additionally, she will consider what types of behaviours are potentially caused by violence, for example, criminal, other asocial behaviours or learning difficulties.

During her time as judge in residence, Justice Moen will be available to assist both sessional instructors and professors in their courses and serve as a resource to students. In particular, Justice Moen hopes that she will have some opportunity to discuss a subject in which she is particularly interested: the independence of the judiciary.

She welcomes any student who wishes to speak with her. She asks you to see her in her office - 405 or leave her a note on her bulletin board detailing where she can reach you if you wish to talk with her.
