Co-creating real-world informed, citizen science (CS) research into language attitudes towards varieties of Canada’s two co-official languages
Project Description:
This project aims to co-create real-world informed, citizen science (CS) research into language attitudes towards varieties of Canada’s two co-official languages by: 1) building the technology and networks for supporting and fostering CS for Canada-wide research and data creation online, as well as in-depth engagement of CS focus groups in Alberta; 2) asking language users to contribute samples of their own speech, establishing a representative database of Canadian speech; 3) asking language users about their perceptions of and attitudes towards regional, bilingual, and non-native accents of French and English, including their own; 4) creating research into the individual-based factors that underlie these attitudes; 5) soliciting questions related to language use that are pertinent to language users. In this way, we hope to lay the foundation for building bridges between people who may, intentionally or unintentionally, exclude others and people who may feel excluded from the linguistic landscape of Canada and, in turn, Canadian society.
