The University of Alberta (UAlberta) was recently awarded $75 million grant over seven years from the federal government's Canada First Research Excellence Fund (CFREF) Program-the largest single grant received by the University to date. Energy researchers in the social sciences and humanities at UAlberta who want to become involved can now also submit Expressions of Interest.
Funding and organizational structure
UAlberta will house the CFREF funding in a new entity called the Future Energy Systems Research Initiative or FESRI. Organizationally, FESRI will report to the Vice-President (Research) Office, and will be under the direction of Larry Kostiuk, Professor, Mechanical Engineering, Associate Vice-President (Research), and a key driver of UAlberta's CFREF application.
A small advisory committee, drawing on energy-based researchers from Arts, Science, Engineering, Native Studies, the School of Business, and Agricultural, Life and Environmental Sciences, has been established to help develop processes to connect with and support researchers in this initiative, and engage the Province of Alberta as a partner.
