ABOUT THE SYMPOSIUM

OVERVIEW

The John Dossetor Health Ethics Centre is hosting a one-day health ethics symposium, Whose Life Is It Anyway? Decision-Making for Those Lacking Capacity. The symposium will take place Friday, October 2, 2015 at the Lister Conference Centre, University of Alberta. Some topics presenters will address are: autonomy and vulnerable trust for individuals lacking capacity, handling disagreements between parents of seriously ill children and health care teams, virtue of physicians as advocates, health care practitioners' difficult conversations, and relationships in difficult decision-making for the mentally ill.

OBJECTIVES

In life we encounter making difficult health care decisions for others. The symposium presentations will focus on the struggle with making difficult decisions, involving the welfare of loved ones, which go far beyond the
ICU, end-of-life, or patients with dementia. The symposium will raise ethical awareness through sharing experiences and expertise, provide educational and learning opportunities, network and community outreach in the area of decision-making for those lacking capacity.
