Intersectional Qualitative Research Short Courses

Interested in Intersectional Approaches to Qualitative Research?

These two courses are the result of collaboration between the Institute for Intersectionality Studies (IIS) and the International Institute for Qualitative Methodology (iiQM). In 2023 IIS and iiQM co-sponsored the Thinking Qualitatively: Doing Intersectionality event that generated the idea for the courses. The development of the courses was supported by SSHRC funds applied for jointly by IIS and iiQM.

Course1: Introduction to Intersectional Qualitative Research

This module is an introductory course intended for individuals who are curious about intersectionality as one important framework to research. It is also intended for those who want to learn the basics of how to design a research project and analyse data through an intersectional lens. (Note: a French translation of this module is in the works.)

See below for how to enroll.

Course 2: Introduction to Intersectional Qualitative Health Research

This module is for persons who are curious about how intersectionality can be used in health equity and qualitative health research. After completing this module, you will be able to identify why intersectionality is important for health equity, explain what intersectional qualitative health research is, and ask good questions about intersectionality in qualitative health research

See below for how to enroll.

Intersectionality focuses on how social categories of power—such as sexism, racism, and ableism—overlap in systemic ways to shape experiences and inequities.

Intersectionality is a powerful theoretical lens and methodological approach.
These courses are a collaboration of the Institute for Intersectionality Studies and the International Institute for Qualitative Methodology at UAlberta.
