Accommodation
Students will be staying in short-term shared housing rentals for the duration of the field school. If possible, home stays with local families may be arranged for some of the time in community. Rentals will have study and leisure spaces and shared kitchen facilities.
Meals
Students will have access to kitchen facilities for breakfast and dinner at the shared accommodation, and will be able to pack lunches for days on site. Weekend meals will be at your discretion. As the kitchen will be shared, it should be possible to accommodate most allergies and dietary restrictions, but please indicate these in your application.
Weekends
The nature of community research is such that there may be events or research activities that take place for your specific project on weekends. These will be at your discretion to organize and/or participate in. Otherwise, you can expect the weekends to be your own for rest. Evenings will also largely be reserved for rest if there are no community events.
Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, Indigenization, and Decolonization (EDIID)
Working with Indigenous communities requires ongoing and informed ethical conduct. As a group we will spend significant time familiarizing ourselves with university, community, and personal ethical protocols, and will develop a code of conduct for this course. This field school is dedicated to EDIID principles in all facets, and the UofA’s student code of behaviour will apply during this course. Students are also expected to adhere to the ethical principles outlined by Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc.
Travel
Students will make their own travel arrangements to Kamloops upon admission to the course. You may choose to fly or drive, and the instructor will have a few seats available in her personal vehicle to bring students to Kamloops. If you do have a personal vehicle, it is recommended to drive, as Kamloops transit is not sufficient for research in many areas of the reserve community. More information will be provided at information sessions.
