Book Discussion (Evening)

Convener: Karen Bain

Evening Book Club is one of the longest active interest groups of the University of Alberta Women’s Club.  We encourage new members to join us and welcome those of you who may find evening meetings more convenient.  We typically meet the third Thursday of each month at 7:30.

Over the past two years, Zoom has offered us an opportunity to continue meeting regularly throughout the pandemic.  For the upcoming year, we have selected a “hybrid” schedule which we hope may appeal to members who may prefer zoom or in-person home socializing.  September, October, and in the spring we will have in person meetings in member’s homes.  For the winter driving and covid cautious, November, December, January, February and perhaps March we will meet through zoom.

The books to be read over 9 months are Shoe Dog: A Memoir by the Creator of Niked, The smallest Lights in the Universe, American Dirt, Where the Crawdads Sing, Vanity Fair, The Other Einstein, The White Angel, and Women Talking.  We also ask the Writer-In-Residence at the University to join us for one meeting and usually read something written by that writer. In June we meet socially, perhaps over dinner, to select books for the following year.  It is our goal to select a variety of books including fiction and non-fiction that will meet the interest of members, but also expand our reading experiences and knowledge about different forms of writing as well as unfamiliar authors.

A year long schedule, with some books assigned, is available by contacting Karen Bain kebain@telus.net or 780-436-6339.
