Admission Requirements
* Effective 2022 October 1
- A completed undergraduate degree in chemical or materials engineering from a recognized institution. NOTE: Applicants must declare all previous academic education and provide acceptable supporting documents for their application to be valid. Click here for more information on Academic Documents. *Graduates with non-engineering backgrounds may be admitted under special arrangements which involve the completion of certain undergraduate engineering courses.
- Grade Point Average (GPA) of 3.0 out of 4.0 in the last two years of study, or an equivalent qualification (see minimum academic requirements by country here)
- English Language Requirement. Applicants with English as an additional language must submit ONE of the following English language test results:
- Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) with a minimum score of 92 iBT with 21 in each section. (Institution Code - 0963, Department Code - 64)
- International English Language Testing System (IELTS Academic) with an overall band score of 7.0 and 6.0 on each band
- Canadian Academic English Language Assessment (CAEL) with a minimum overall score of 70, and 60 on each sub-test
- Pearson Test of English Academic (PTE Academic) with a minimum score of 62, and a score of 60 on each band
- Duolingo English Test score must be minimum 120 overall with no subscore below 100. Duolingo allows 2 attempts within 30 days.
*English test results must be dated within the past two years.
*The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering does NOT use the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies' exemption list for waiving the English language requirement.
* EAP 550 is NOT sufficient to meet our English language requirement.
* Letters of English proficiency are NOT sufficient to meet our English language requirement.
* Only students who have completed a degree from Canada, USA, UK, Australia, or New Zealand are exempt from the English language requirement.
Important notes for all applicants:
- Applicants currently enrolled in a degree program at another recognized university must finish that program prior to admission to the University of Alberta
- Applicants with an MSc or equivalent will only be considered for the PhD program
- Applicants who hold a PhD in a field of science or engineering will not be admitted to the graduate program here
- Applicants for the MEng program must have an undergraduate degree in engineering
