Degree Programs

There are several post-graduate programs to choose from in our department.

Consider the Master of Science (MSc) program if you want to specialize in an area within chemical, process control, or materials engineering. The MSc is a full-time, research-based program requiring the completion of a thesis. An MSc will help students concentrate on one area of study, which will benefit them as they enter or re-enter the industry with more advanced skills and knowledge.

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) program is a rigorous, research-oriented program requiring the completion of a thesis. Taking specialization to the next level, this program builds on students' analytical skills and leads to careers in academics or corporate research.

The Master of Engineering (MEng) program is a course-based program, requiring 8 courses and one project. There is NO funding for this program.

We also offer a joint MBA/MEng degree program with the School of Business. Interested applicants should apply through the Alberta School of Business.

The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering offers Master of Science degrees in:

MSc in Chemical Engineering

MSc in Materials Engineering

MSc in Process Control

The requirements for the MSc degree consist of:

  • successful completion of course work
  • participation in seminars
  • completion of the ethics course ENGG 600, and
  • presentation of a thesis which embodies the results of independent research.
  • MSc students must complete all of the requirements within four years from the time they first register as graduate students. The typical time to completion for our students is currently approximately 2-2.5 years.

The MSc minimum course requirement is four courses plus the ethics course. At least two courses must be 600 or higher level courses in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering. The balance of the courses shall be at the 500 or higher level in the Faculty of Engineering, or at the 400 or higher level in a Science Department. Science courses at the 400 level must be approved by the supervisor and Associate Chair (Graduate).

The Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering offers Doctor of Philosophy degrees in:

PhD in Process Control

The requirements for the PhD degree consist of:

  • successful completion of course work
  • participation in seminars
  • completion of the ethics course ENGG 600, and presentation of a thesis which embodies the results of independent research.
  • PhD students must pass a candidacy examination within 16 months of first registration in the program. PhD students must complete all the requirements within six years from the time they first register as graduate students. The current time to completion for our students is approximately 4.5 years.

The PhD minimum course requirement is six courses plus the ethics course. At least three courses must be 600 or higher level courses in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering. Students entering the PhD program with a Masters degree may obtain exemption for up to two courses at the discretion of the Associate Chair (Graduate).

The requirements for the MEng degree consist of:

  • successful completion of course work
  • completion of the ethics course ENGG 600
  • completion of the projects course CME 900
  • completion of the professional development requirement
  • MEng students must complete all of the requirements within six years from the time they first register as graduate students. The typical time to completion for our students is currently approximately 2 years.

The MEng minimum course requirement is eight courses plus the project course. At least four courses must be courses in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering. At least of these courses must be 600 level or higher. The balance of the courses shall be at the 500 or higher level in the Faculty of Engineering.
