CBD Program
Competence By Design (CBD) is an initiative by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada to transform all specialist training to a competency based model. Emergency Medicine is proud to be among the first specialties to make the change on July 1, 2018. Trainees starting the Emergency Medicine residency on July 1, 2018, and afterwards will be in the CBD system.
CBD residents will progress through the four Stages of training. Promotion will be based on completion of Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) for each Stage. The EPA Map outlines the rotations and the EPAs most relevant to each rotation. The EPA Guide can be found here and our pocket guide can be found here.
Each Tuesday is Academic Full Day. The calendar lists the learning activities for each day. In addition, residents participate in the monthly Journal Club. The CanMEDS Observer Program will continue in CBD; the mentor will use EPAs instead of the former CanMEDS Observer form.
