Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarship Recipients: Guher Gorgun and Genan Hamad
7 March 2022
Guher Gorgun and Genan Hamad, graduate students in Educational
Psychology, have been awarded Alberta Innovates Graduate Student Scholarships. These
scholarships are offered by Alberta Advanced Education in partnership with Alberta Innovates in
the support of academically superior graduate students whose research is focussed on emerging
technologies considered strategically important to Alberta.
Guher Gorgun: Guher is a third-year Ph.D. student in the Measurement, Evaluation, and Data
Science program (MEDS), supervised by Dr. Okan Bulut. The Alberta Innovates Graduate
Student Scholarship will allow Guher to develop an automated scoring and feedback system for
higher education. Guher's system will focus on assessments with open-ended questions targeting
higher-order cognitive skills such as reasoning, evaluative thinking, and decision-making. She
will work closely with students and instructors to integrate their views and perspectives into the
system development process. Guher will make the final version of her system publicly available
to other researchers, educators, and practitioners.
Genan Hamad: Genan Hamad is a first-year Ph.D. student in the Measurement, Evaluation, and
Data Science program (MEDS), supervised by Dr. Okan Bulut. She is also a member of the
executive committee of SEP Graduate Student Association. The Alberta Innovates Graduate
Student Scholarship will help Genan develop new psychometric methods for the detection of
cheating on online assessments in higher education. She will use machine learning models to
detect cheating and aberrant behaviours based on human-computer interactions in online assessments.
