Master of Arts (Course Based)

Course requirements:

  • Five required courses (Econ 503, 581, 598, 599 and 999)
  • Four graduate level (500 and 600 level) elective courses.
  • ECON 999 - Econ 999 involves an independent research project and is designed for students who have completed all other course requirements.  The course is only offered the Spring semester and registration is done by the department. ECON 999 includes a presentation by the student and feedback by the supervisor and the students' peers. The project does normally exceed 50 pages and is evaluated by the course instructor and a faculty member familiar with the research topic.

  • Students are required to take at least 3 courses (9 credits) per term to maintain full-time status.

*Students have the opportunity to revise and resubmit the paper if they wish to try to improve their grade.

Students register for courses via Bear Tracks with the exception of ECON 999.

Professional Development and Academic Citizenship and Ethics Requirements

Students must complete Int D 710: Ethics and Academic Citizenship in their first semester.  Int D 710 is an online, self-paced course. For more information, students can refer to FGSR Ethics and Academic Citizenship

Students must complete 8 hours of professional development activities , and an Individual Development Plan. For more information and materials refer to the Faculty of Graduate Studies and Research : Professional Development Activiites and Individual Development Plan.

Time Limit for Completion

Students in our MA program typically complete within 10 months. Students are expected to complete the IDP portion of the Professional Development requirement by the end of Spring Reading Week of their first year. All requirements (course work, Academic Citizenship & Ethics, Professional Development and IPD) must be completed within 4 years from the time they first register in the program. Students must complete all course work, academic citzenship & ethics and professional development requirements to be eligible to convocate.
