2024 Korean Speech Contest & K-POP Dance Contest at the University of Alberta

- Korean Speech Contest Deadline for Online Application: October 11 (F), 2024.

- Qualifications for Korean Speech Contest
- Not a native speaker of Korean
- Qualify for one of the following contest categories
(1) Novice – Speech
- Not have a parent/guardian who is a native speaker of Korean
- Studied the Korean language for less than 70 hours or currently taking Korea 101.
(2) Beginner – Speech
- Not have a parent/guardian who is a native speaker of Korean
- Studied the Korean language for less than 210 hours or currently taking Korea 201.
(3) Intermediate - Speech
- Not have a parent/guardian who is a native speaker of Korean
- Studied the Korean language for less than 340 hours, or currently taking Korea 301.
(4) Advanced - Speech
- Not have a parent/guardian who is a native speaker of Korean
- Studied the Korean language for more than 340 hours or currently taking Korea 401. (No limit on hours of study)
- Procedures:
- Choose a title of your speech
- Write your own speech
- Memorize the speech
- Submit the application form by October 11 (F), 2024. Email: jinmi@ualberta.ca
- 20 contestants will be pre-selected through the preliminary contest. Korean Speech Preliminary Contest: Friday, November 1, 2024, at 5 PM.
- Speech Length:
- Novice: 2-3 minutes (100 level)
- Beginner: 2~3 minutes (200 level)
- Intermediate: 3~4 minutes (300 level)
- Advanced: 4~5 minutes (400 level)
- K-POP Dance Contest Deadline for Online Application and the Performance Video Submission: Saturday, Oct. 25, 2024
- Application and the performance video (lesson than 5 min.) are accepted by email or direct contact to Jin Mi Kwon. Email: jinmi@ualberta.ca
- K-POP Dance Contest Qualifications:
- No limit on hours of Korean study
- Can have either or both parents/guardians who are native speakers of Korean
- Your group should include at least one of the University of Alberta Korean language students or alumni of the Korean language program.
- The group must not exceed 7 members.
- Length of Dance: less than 5 minutes
- Mixture of songs for dance is allowed.
- Note: Contestants who exceed the time limits will be subject to demerit points. If the number of participating teams exceeds the limit, a selection process will be conducted based on performance videos submitted by each team, and only the finalists will proceed to the main competition.
- Judges and Evaluation Criteria:
- The panel of judges includes individuals from the consulate office in Vancouver, the University of Alberta East Asian Studies department, and the Edmonton Korean Canadian Associations.
- Speeches will be assessed according to the criteria of content, grammar, organization, presentation and pronunciation.
- Dance will be assessed according to the content, manner of presentation, technical skills, and overall performance.
- Certificates and prizes:
- All contestants including preliminary contest will be awarded a participation gift.
- The top 3 winners in each category of the Korean Speech Contest will be awarded by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea.
- The top 4 winners of the K-POP Dance Contest will be awarded by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea.

2nd Place - 1 Team
3rd Place - 1 Team
4th Place - 2 Teams
