2023 Korean Speech Contest

Join us for the 2023 Korean Speech Contest at the University of Alberta on Wednesday, September 27 at 3:30-6:00 PM in Humanities Centre HC L1-L1. This event is organized by the Department of the East Asian Studies at the University ofAlberta, and the Consulate General of the Republic of Korean in Vancouver.
Contestants will be pre-selected through the preliminary contest.

Qualifications:
(1) Novice – K-POP Singing : Solo or Duet
• Not have a parent/guardian who is a native speaker of Korean
• Studied Korean language for less than 70 hours or currently taking Korea 101.
(2) Beginner – Speech
• Not have a parent/guardian who is a native speaker of Korean
• Studied Korean language for less than 210 hours or currently taking Korea
201.
(3) Intermediate - Speech
• Not have a parent/guardian who is a native speaker of Korean
• Studied the Korean language for less than 340 hours, or currently taking
Korea 301.
(4) Advanced - Speech
• Not have a parent/guardian who is a native speaker of Korean
• Studied the Korean language for more than 340 hours or currently taking
Korea 401. (No limit on hours of study)
Procedures:
• Submit the application form and by September 15, 2023.
(1) K-POP Singing
• Choose a K-POP song
• Memorize the lyrics
(2) Speech
• Choose a title of your speech
• Write your own speech
• Memorize the speech
7. Speech and Singing Length:
• Novice: 3~5 minutes
• Beginner: 2~3 minutes
• Intermediate: 3~4 minutes
• Advanced: 3~4 minutes
8. Judges and Evaluation Criteria:
• Panel of judges is comprised of community leaders from the Edmonton
Korean Canadian Associations.
• Speeches will be assessed according to the criteria of pronunciation, fluency,
content, communicative effectiveness.
• Singing will be assessed according to the pronunciation, manner of
presentation, overall performance.
9. Certificates and prizes:
• All contestants will be awarded a participation certificate and a gift.
• Top 3 winners in each category will be awarded by the Consulate General of
the Republic of Korea.
The 1st winner: $250
2nd winner: $150
3rd winner: $100
