The 2011 University of Alberta Korean Language Speech Contest
The first U of A Korean Speech Contest was held on Friday, April 1, 2011. Sixteen students learning Korean presented their speeches in three categories: Beginner (8), Intermediate (5), and Open (3). The Department of East Asian Studies have offered the best opportunities for learners of Korean to demonstrate their knowledge and performance of the Korean language.
Dr. Lin, Acting Acting Chair, kindly gave welcoming remarks to motivate the students and to promote the Korean Studies program here at the University of Alberta. Three judges were invited: Dr. Ryu, Soung-Ryoul Ryo (Assistant Professor, Department of Renewable Resources), Mr. Lee (President of The Association of Korean Society of Edmonton), and Dr. Insuk Lee (Visiting Professor, Department of East Asian Studies).
The winners are as follows:
Beginner: 1st - Kendrick Hua "My Dream"; 2nd - Yiying Lin "My Hometown, Wenzhou"; 3rd - Anna Lieu "My Hobbies"
Intermediate: 1st - Jessie Makofka "My Korean Study Abroad Dreams"; 2nd - Li Xu (Faye) "My Canadian Life and Korean Culture"; 3rd - Kyusin Park "Europe Travel of my Family"
The winners received a prize and a certificate and a souvenir was given to all participants. After the contest, a pizza party was offered to all the partipants and attendees.
