About Us
The SCA Office’s primary functions are making decisions on complaints, educating and training the university community, advising and providing student conduct support to campus partners.
SCA is made up of a Manager, who is responsible for running the office, two Student Conduct Officers (SCOs), a Student Integrity Education Officer (SIEO), and an Educational Program Designer (EPD).
DECISION MAKING
Student Academic Misconduct:
Most cases of academic misconduct are resolved at the Faculty level. Student Conduct Officers have the authority to apply sanctions of suspension, expulsion, suspension of a degree, and rescission of a degree. A Faculty Decision-Maker will refer a case to the SCA office where they seek to apply these specific sanctions.
Student Non-Academic Misconduct:
Those impacted by non-academic misconduct of a student have multiple support and response options available. The Dean of Students Office is responsible for accepting complaints under the Student Conduct Policy. Once these complaints have been investigated, a report of the facts related to the case is sent to SCA. We base our decisions on the information in the report and our hearings with the complainant and respondent.
Student Conduct Officers
The SCOs make decisions on complaints of alleged student academic and non-academic misconduct. The policies of the jurisdiction include the Student Academic Integrity Policy , and the Student Conduct Policy (SCP). SCOs make decisions on two matters:
- whether the alleged activity was a violation of a policy, and
- if we find that it was, what the appropriate sanction(s) would be.
Guided by policy, in making any decision about sanctions, we balance the rights of the student under allegation, fairness for those impacted by the alleged violation, and the safety and integrity of the community.
They also make decisions on certain appeal types. That is, appeals of Student Misconduct Tickets and appeals of the Dean of Students’ decision not to proceed with a complaint under the SCP.
EDUCATION AND TRAINING
Student Integrity Education Officer
The SIEO is tasked with educating students on appropriate behaviour, both academic and non-academic, in an academic community. Our aim is for students to learn about those expectations and the impact of inappropriate behaviour on others and avoid allegations of misconduct occurring in the first place.
Educational Program Designer
The EPD supports the SCA team with the development of educational resources necessary for the promotion of positive student conduct for students as well as training materials for faculty and staff across the University.
ADVISING AND STUDENT CONDUCT SUPPORT
Student Conduct and Accountability acts as a repository of knowledge and experience on addressing student conduct, providing support and advice to other offices engaged in addressing or supporting conduct processes.
If you are a respondent or complainant participating in a complaint process and need advice or a support, you can reach out to these areas:
