Information for Teachers and References
The HYRS program receives far more applications each year than we have available placements. Typically, we place between 20-30 students in the HYRS program each year, out of ~175 applicants. Please note, as a condition of our funding from Alberta Innovates, no more than 2 students from the same high school can be accepted into the HYRS program per year.
References are an important part of the selection process, as references have firsthand familiarity with the students, and can often provide key insight into students' academic and lived experiences.
Please keep the following in mind when completing your reference:
- References whose responses are supported by specific examples are most helpful to the selection committee. Generic references, particularly when similar language is submitted by the same reference for multiple students, may reflect poorly on the students’ applications.
- To reduce potential for bias, please avoid using the student's name or pronouns in your reference. Please use they/them pronouns and the student's first and last initials only.
- Most applicants to the HYRS program have strong high school grades, and as such, the HYRS program does not consider grades beyond the minimum 85% eligibility threshold. We are looking for well-rounded students who are prepared to handle the responsibility and challenge of a university-level research environment, including the potential for failure/adversity inherent to the research process.
- The HYRS program emphasizes career exploration and development of career management skills. The program is ideal for students who have an interest in science or health sciences, who remain open to considering a range of possible career options.
- Given the limited number of HYRS placements available each year, we are looking to identify the applicants for whom the HYRS experience is likely to be most impactful, and particularly students who may have less access/privilege to participate in other career exploration or experiential/hands-on learning opportunities.
References are due by March 15, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.
The student’s application will not be considered complete unless both references are received by this date. Incomplete applications will not be forwarded to the selection committee to review.
