Get Involved
Getting involved in leadership and volunteer activities is a great way to feel connected and engaged during your time on campus.
Student Leadership & Networks
The Aboriginal Student Council (ASC) is a student group on campus that unites its members for fun, friendship, and learning. ASC works closely with the First Peoples' House and other faculties and programs to provide both on campus and community events.
Indigenous Graduate Students' Association
Tansi! The Indigenous Graduate Students’ Association (IGSA) is a collective of diverse Indigenous-identifying graduate students at the University of Alberta. We became a registered graduate student group at the U of A in 2018, and have since been successful in obtaining funding, gaining dedicated space on North Campus.
Alumni Chapter
From 40 years of Aboriginal students coming through our doors to the 1100 current self-declared Aboriginal students, our First Peoples' House family continues to grow. The First Peoples' House Alumni Chapter connects and reconnects the alumni family through a variety of events and opportunities.
On-Campus Volunteering
Volunteering is a great way to get involved with campus. It provides an opportunity to give back to your campus community and to make new friends along the way. Volunteer opportunities include:
University of Alberta Open House
Every year First Peoples' House welcomes prospective Aboriginal students to campus and helps explain the supports and services available to all Aboriginal students on campus.
Every year First Peoples' House hosts the Annual Round Dance, which is a community event that welcomes all guests to campus. The Round Dance is hosted at the end of January and welcomes all volunteers for a variety of duties.
Every year at the end of August, we host the annual two-day First Peoples' House Orientation, which welcomes all "New to U" Aboriginal students to campus. During this two-day event, volunteers help with a variety of duties, such as registration, helping with BBQ, and being a part of a student panel - to give the new students tips on being a successful student.
U School
Every year, the Office of the Senate welcomes students from Edmonton and surrounding area to take part in U School. Students from grades 4 to 9 are given the opportunities to learn about different programs on campus.
U School works with classroom teachers to develop a week-long experience related to learning objectives and expose students to things unique to the U of A.
Aboriginal Campus Ambassador
Each year the Office of the Registrar recruits Aboriginal students to become Aboriginal Campus Ambassadors, where current Aboriginal students have the opportunity to lead Aboriginal-specific tours to groups of potential students from Aboriginal communities.
