Sign Language Interpreting and Real-Time Captioning (CART) Services
Professionally-trained interpreters who provide service to the University of Alberta have the ability to match the needs of students, whether they prefer the interpretation to be in American Sign Language/English or a contact variety of sign language. Services may be arranged for lectures, seminars, and labs as well as for practicum placements and other experiential learning opportunities, in consultation with the Academic Success Centre.
Real-time captioning services are available as an accommodation for students who are Deaf or hard of hearing to provide access to sound-based lectures in a text based format. Services may be arranged for synchronous lectures, seminars, and labs as well as for practicum placements and other experiential learning opportunities, in consultation with the Academic Success Centre.
Interpreting and real-time captioning services require a great deal of pre-planning in order to be in place for the first day of an academic term. Deaf/hard of hearing students who will be attending the University of Alberta and who wish to access interpreting or real-time captioning services should contact the Academic Success Centre a minimum of 10 weeks prior to a term start to discuss the accommodation.
