Register for Accommodations

In accordance with the University of Alberta’s Discrimination, Harassment, and Duty to Accommodate Policy, the University of Alberta provides reasonable accommodations to eligible students who encounter medical or non-medical restrictions to their ability to perform the daily activities necessary to pursue studies at a post-secondary level. Medical restrictions include physical and mental health conditions (i.e., physical and mental disability, or medical, protected grounds); and, non-medical restrictions include differential access or unfair treatment based on characteristics or perceived characteristics of an individual or group of individuals (i.e., non-medical protected grounds).

Any student who wishes to request accommodations needs to complete an application, and provide supporting documentation that explains and verifies the basis of the application. Accommodation is a shared responsibility between the University and the individual in need of accommodation, and is assessed on the unique circumstances of each individual.

Apply Early: We recommend that you apply as early as possible in order to ensure sufficient time to complete accommodation registration and coordination. Access to certain accommodations may require additional time.

If you are a new or incoming student, apply for accommodations as soon as you accept your offer to study at the University of Alberta.
If you are a current student, you may apply for accommodations at any time.
You must have completed the entire registration procedure by the exam registration deadline of a given term in order to be eligible for exam accommodations for that term.

Students are advised to review and adhere to published deadlines for accommodation approval and for specific accommodation requests (e.g., exam registration submission deadlines). Students who request accommodations less than a month in advance of the academic term for which they require accommodations may experience unavoidable delays or consequences in their academic programs, and may need to consider alternative academic schedules.

Before you complete the accommodation application process,

Confirm your accommodation eligibility.
Review accommodation documentation requirements and collect/complete your supporting documents.
Review funding and payment requirements.

Important Accommodation Guidelines

The Accommodation Guidelines apply to all accommodation applications and approved accommodations at the University of Alberta (the ‘University’).
While applications may be submitted at any time, we highly recommend that students submit their applications as early as possible. PLEASE NOTE: Students who request accommodations less than a month in advance of the academic term for which they require accommodations may experience unavoidable delays or consequences in their academic programs, and may need to consider alternative academic schedules.
Accommodations are provided in accordance with the University’s Discrimination, Harassment and Duty to Accommodate Policy. Submission of accommodation registration forms and/or supporting documentation does not guarantee the provision of specific accommodations.
All components of application procedures (including information submitted in student applications) are subject to the policies and regulations of the University, including the Code of Student Behaviour.
Requests for accommodations will be considered only upon submission of complete application forms and supporting documentation (if applicable). Incomplete application forms will not be reviewed.
Supporting documentation submitted in support of accommodation requests must be completed in English or French.
Students are expected to attend their scheduled classes and other academic activities in person until they receive written notification that their accommodation request has been approved, and to accept any consequences of not attending class in the intervening time period.
The University reserves the right to make appropriate inquiries to verify the authenticity of applications, including review by applicable medical specialists for applications based on medical protected grounds or consultation with relevant specialists for applications made on other protected grounds in accordance with the University's Discrimination, Harassment and Duty to Accommodate Policy.
The University may require that students applying for accommodations provide additional information in order to consider and decide on a request.
The University reserves the right to request statutory declarations from students applying for accommodations in order to verify information submitted in their applications.
Students are not approved for accommodations until they receive email notification of accommodation approval via their University of Alberta email accounts.
Students approved for accommodations who no longer require their accommodations must immediately notify the University.
Students registered for accommodations may at any time submit for review additional supporting documentation in support of requests for additional accommodations.
The University may modify or cancel accommodations upon reasonable notice in response to changes in University policies or procedures.
Student accommodation decisions may be appealed using the process outlined in the University’s Duty to Accommodate Procedure (see section 3, “Appeals”, in the procedure).

Privacy Notice

The personal information you provide in University of Alberta accommodation applications and associated with accommodation provision is confidential.

The personal information requested is collected under the authority of Section 33(c) of the Alberta Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy (FOIPP) Act and will be protected under Part 2 of that Act. It will be used for registration and administrative purposes in the above program offered by the University of Alberta Office of the Dean of Students. This information may be shared as needed to facilitate your accommodations with other University of Alberta faculties, departments, or units.
