The Dr. Wu Dat Nin Chin Scholarship in Critical Care Medicine

This scholarship aims to honor the legacy and the substantial contributions Dr. Wu Dat Nin Chin has made to education, research, and service in critical care medicine at the University of Alberta and in the Edmonton Zone; as well as his leadership in the development and recognition of the discipline of Critical Care Medicine in Canada.

This scholarship fund is supported and administered by the Department of Critical Care Medicine (DCCM), Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta.

 Award Overview

  • The purpose of the Dr. Wu Dat Nin Chin Scholarship is to generate awareness of critical care, build research capacity in critical care, and develop new generations of outstanding scientists in critical care medicine.
  • The scholarship is research focused. One award will be offered annually.
  • The scholarship aims to fund one summer studentship (maximum $6,000 per studentship) annually.
  • Applications will be evaluated based on the applicant’s academic record and research achievements (60%), the merit of the proposed research project, and the quality of the supervisory and research training environment (40%).

 Eligibility

  • Students must be registered in a full-time MD program, undergraduate studies, or a graduate studies (MSc or PhD) program at the University of Alberta.
  • Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 3.5 over the past two years.
  • Applicants must be endorsed and supported by a member of the Department of Critical Care Medicine, who would serve as their primary supervisor.
  • Applicants must complete the application form and submit all required accompanying documents (see Application Procedure below).

 Application Procedure

  • Complete the application form.
  • Current Curriculum Vitae
  • Current University-level transcripts (transcripts do not need to be official).
  • Two letters of reference, one of which must be from the supervisor. The supervisor letter of reference should be emailed directly to ccmchair@ualberta.ca. The applicant should not be copied on this email.

 Award Details

  • Supervisors are required to provide additional funds to support applicants beyond the scope and tenure of this scholarship.
  • Applicants may only hold this award once per eligible training program type.
  • It is the responsibility of the supervisor and/or applicant to inform the DCCM if they receive another award.
  • The Dr. Wu Dat Nin Chin Scholarship is tenable at the University of Alberta.
  • Eligible expenses can include: applicant stipend; direct project-related costs (e.g., data acquisition, access, analysis, equipment) and indirect project-related costs (e.g., conference/travel, publication).
  • Funding is non-transferable.

Application Deadline
The deadline for applications will be the annually on the first Wednesday of March (March 1, 2024).

Review Process
All applications will be evaluated by a DCCM Adjudication Committee (supervisors recused from the committee). The scholarship award will be based on excellence of the candidate (60%) and of the research proposal, supervisor and training environment (40%). The applications will be reviewed and awarded according to rigorous peer review standards.

Competition Results
An official letter of results will be emailed to the applicant and their supervisor with the application outcome within 4 weeks of the application deadline.

Reporting
Any scholarly product, presentation and/or publication arising from the scholarship should recognize the support of the Dr. Wu Dat Nin Chin Scholarship and the Department of Critical Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta. The applicant and supervisor must complete and submit a progress report within one month of the termination or completion of the award. This report should include a summary of the research conducted during the training and significance of the results and list any scholarly products, presentations, or publications.

Award Termination
The DCCM reserves the right to terminate any award if the conditions of the award are not met, or if there is evidence of unsatisfactory progress. The applicant and/or supervisor must immediately notify the DCCM of any changes that may affect continued eligibility to hold the award. This includes, but is not limited to, changes in employment status, and leave of absences.
