Neurosciences ICU Award – Joint Scholarship Award between Neurology and Critical Care Medicine


Award Overview
The purpose of this Neurosciences ICU Scholarship is to attract and retain outstanding clinician scientists to the Division of Neurology and the Department of Critical Care Medicine, Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry, University of Alberta to conduct postdoctoral scholarly activities in neurocritical care.

Up to one award may be available annually – contingent on funding availability.

The scholarship will be awarded competitively based on the strength of the candidate, the quality of the mentorship environment and the excellence of the proposed scholarly project. The supervisor must be a faculty member in the Division of Neurology or the Department of Critical Care Medicine.


Eligibility
To apply for this competition:

  • Your application must be supported by a Faculty member in the Division of Neurology and the Department of Critical Care Medicine, one of whom will become your supervisor;
  • You must hold an MD and have minimal and suitable research training (e.g., MSc, PhD or equivalent) and plan to work in an area that falls within priority research areas in neurocritical care;
  • You must provide a letter of intent and complete application form along with all required supporting documents (see Application section below);
  • You must provide one letter of reference.

Award Details
The scholarship in partnership between the Division of Neurology or the Department of Critical Care Medicine will be awarded each year for a term of one year. The value of the scholarship is $40,000 to be used toward salary costs. Supervisors are responsible for benefits, if applicable.

Supervisors would be required to provide additional funding support to extend the scholarship beyond the first year. Funding is non-transferable.

It is the responsibility of the supervisor and/or awardee to inform the Division of Neurology and the Department of Critical Care Medicine if they receive an additional award. Awardees are encouraged to apply for additional funding to support their scholarship.


Application
A complete application form must be submitted to the Division on Neurology and Department of Critical Care Medicine.

 Applications that are either: i) incomplete, or ii) non-compliant with the scholarship guidelines and/or application instructions may not be forwarded for review/funding consideration.

Review Process
All applications are evaluated by the Division of Neurology and Department of Critical Care Medicine Adjudication Committee (supervisors recused from the committee); awards based on excellence of the candidate (60%) and of the scholarly proposal (40%); applications awarded according to rigorous peer review standards.

Competition Results
Official result letters will be emailed to the applicant and their supervisor with the application outcome.

Reporting
Publications should recognize the scholarship and the Division of Neurology and Department of Critical Care Medicine, as applicable.

The trainee and supervisor must complete and submit a progress report within one month of the termination or completion of the award. This report should include a summary of the scholarly work conducted during the training and significance of the results and list any publications.

Award Termination
The Division of Neurology and Department of Critical Care Medicine reserves the right to terminate the award if the conditions of the award are not met, or if there is evidence of unsatisfactory progress. The applicant and/or supervisor must immediately notify the Division of Neurology and Department of Critical Care Medicine of any changes that may affect continued eligibility to hold the award. This includes, but is not limited to, changes in employment status and leave of absences.
