Announcing Chair of Critical Care Medicine

Dr. Bagshaw is a Clinician Scientist and Associate Professor of Critical Care Medicine. He trained at the University of Calgary (Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, Masters of Science Epidemiology) and the Austin Hospital (Critical Care Nephrology) in Melbourne, Australia. Dr. Bagshaw joined the Department of Critical Care Medicine in the Faculty of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Alberta in 2007.

Dr. Bagshaw is supported by a Canada Research Chair in Critical Care Nephrology (Tier 2 - Renewed). He has research expertise in epidemiology, clinical trials and health services research. His research focuses on health outcome evaluation, ICU organization, acute kidney injury, vulnerable populations (e.g., elderly, frail), and end-of-life care.

He provides clinical care to critically ill patients in two of the largest and busiest intensive care units (ICU) in Alberta: General Systems ICU at the University of Alberta Hospital and Cardiovascular Surgical ICU at the Mazankowski Alberta Heart Institute.

He has published over 350 peer-reviewed papers (h-index 65) and has received over $45 million in research funding support. He is co-PI for the multi-national STARRT-AKI trial evaluating the optimal timing for starting dialysis therapy in critically ill patients with acute kidney injury (https://www.ualberta.ca/critical-care/research/current-research/starrtaki).

Dr. Bagshaw is a member of several organizations including the Canadian Critical Care Society, Canadian Critical Care Trials Group, and the Acute Disease Quality Initiative. He currently serves as Scientific Director for the Critical Care Strategic Network.
