Teaching
Teaching Development Policy
Developing teaching skills is a vital component of training for an academic placement upon graduation. To prepare for teaching, students are strongly encouraged to complete Level 1 of the Graduate Teaching and Learning Program offered by the Faculty of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies by the start of their third year in the program. Alternatively, they can complete 15 hours of teaching workshops and 10 hours of teaching mentorship prior to their first teaching assignment.
Teaching Requirements
Students are required to teach two classes (or equivalent) in years three and four of their program. This requirement is part of the five-year funding package. Department Chairs assign the teaching after students have passed their comprehensive exams.
Additional Teaching
PhD students are normally provided with financial support for a period of five years. The objective is that students will graduate and take a job within five years. If students do not finish in that time, various funding options may be available. Some may teach as sessional instructors in the School of Business. Departments are usually able to provide such sessional instructor positions, dependent on students' teaching capabilities. See also Funding.
