Program Overview - Part-Time MBA
Similar to the curriculum of our Full-Time MBA, students will complete 20 courses in the Part-Time MBA program. All students would complete a grounding in the fundamentals of business by completing our core curriculum. Building off of the core courses, you would be able to tailor your MBA education to your own interests by choosing electives within our general MBA or completing our Career Tracks .
Degree Requirements
Students are required to complete 60-credits to meet the MBA degree requirements. This includes 10 core courses, the MBA Capstone course, and 9 elective courses.
Program Delivery
The UAlberta MBA can be completed through a combination of online and in-person study.
Online Courses
Online courses are offered asynchronously and have been specifically designed to maximize learning outcomes. With course materials and lectures available on demand, you are able to learn on your own schedule from anywhere. However, you can expect in most cases that assignments and exams will be due at set times over the term. Courses are intended to be completed gradually over the length of the term.
Evening Courses
In-person courses in the part-time program are offered primarily during weekday evenings. Classes run from 6 - 9 PM or 6:30 - 9:30 PM, one night per week over the Fall and Winter semesters. Most students will take two courses during both the Fall and Winter terms, although it is possible to speed up the program by taking more than two courses per term. Evening courses during the Spring and Summer terms run from 6 - 9 PM or 6:30 - 9:30 PM two nights a week.
One-Week & Intensive Courses
In addition to evening courses, there are also one-week & intensive courses offered during the program. One-week courses are primarily offered over the Spring and Summer terms. Intensive courses offered over two weekends of study are offered throughout the year. Both one-week and intensive courses are full 3-credit courses that offer the same contact hours as our evening courses. Without compromising the educational experience, the one-week and intensive courses allow you to immerse yourself in the subject at hand while speeding up the completion of your MBA.
Core Curriculum
During the first half of the Part-Time MBA program, you will focus on completing the fundamentals of business. As part of our core curriculum, you'll complete 10 courses, with 9 common to every student and your choice of one of three core electives:

Core Electives
MBA Capstone: Real-World Experience
Apart from our MBA Core Courses, students will be required to take the MBA capstone course, SEM 641: Business Strategy. You will work with an outside organization on a strategic issue they are facing. Your team will identify the issue and potential solutions, recommend a course of action, and develop an implementation plan for your client. This provides an opportunity to apply what you've learned in the Alberta MBA in a real-world setting and gain experience during your studies.
Career Tracks & Electives
In choosing electives, students can choose to complete their own customized program or complete the requirements for one of the UAlberta MBA Career Tracks or areas of focus. These are:
- Energy Finance
This track is great for individuals with engineering, business, or public policy backgrounds. - Operations & Business Analytics
Perfect for individuals with a background in technology/computer science or purchasing/logistics. - Strategy & Consulting
