BDes Printmaking Route

NOTE: Applicants interested in the Printmaking route, who are applying for September 2019 or later, should choose the General route and choose printmaking courses (ART 322, 323, 422, and 522; and DES 425 and 525) in addition to their Visual Communication Design courses.

Learn the techniques employed by the world's original graphic designers! This is the perfect route for those who want to combine a love of the digital and the hand-made, to combine the structure of visual communication design with the latitude of visual art.

A fascinating hybrid
The printmaking route gives you the opportunity to combine the energy and intuitive process of creating fine art in our world-renowned printmaking program with the structural and logical process used by visual communication designers. The study of printmaking will stretch your creative thought processes as you produce imagery which is unlimited by the boundaries of the commercial printing processes.

But what is Printmaking?
Printmaking is the hands-on approach of creating multiple original artworks in lithography, woodcut, collagraph, lino-cut, and other relief methods as well as silkscreen printing. In senior level courses you will be introduced to photo-based and digital imaging techniques used in mixed print media. You will expand your design scope as you learn valuable lessons from the printmaking process, which allows you to interact with imagery from the conceptual to the final production stage.

Important Notes about BDes Program Requirements

• BDes students must carry a minimum course load of 24 credits (eight 3-credit classes) over each Fall and Winter. Therefore the program will generally take between 4 and 5 years.
• Arts and Science options can not be met with ART, DES or HADVC classes. Your options courses must come from any other Department within the Faculty of Arts or Faculty of Science. The only exception to this rule can be found in the final line of the Year 4 program requirements (please see below).
• If you choose, you may replace up to two of your Arts/Science options with courses from other Faculties. Students interested in fashion could take Human Ecology (HECOL) courses; students interested in medical illustration could take Anatomy (ANAT) courses; students interested in sports and recreation can take physical activity (PAC) courses; etc.
• "Senior" level options must be 200-level courses or higher
• If you transfer into the BDes program with credit from ART 134 and DES 135 (or 6* of equivalent first year studio courses), they will take the place of ART 136 and DES 138. You will make up the missing 6* of studios with any ART or DES courses at any point in your degree.
• Students may adjust the sequencing of some of the courses below provided that prerequisite course requirements are met for any courses you wish to take.
• You can generally replace a lower level course with a higher level course for unspecified ART, DES, and options requirements, but not the other way around. For instance you can replace an open "300-level DES" requirement with a 500-level DES class, or a 100-level arts/science option with a 300-level arts/science option.
